What is Weaning?

Weaning is the process of introducing an infant to semi- solid food along with breast milk to complement his growing nutritional needs.

Babies should be exclusively breast fed up till the first 6 months of life. Then gradually solid foods should be introduced while continuing to breastfeed for as long as possible.

When to Wean a Baby?

Your baby will also be your guide and show some of the following signs that they are ready to take solids. Your baby may not necessarily show all these signs but there will be an indicator as to when is the right time to begin weaning:

  • They will be able to support themselves in an upright position
  • They show an interest  in what you are eating
  • They are putting their hands or various objects in their mouth
  • They are demonstrating a munching up/down jaw movement when mouthing non-food items
  • They may appear hungry or dissatisfied after mothers feed, or be looking for or waking up for more frequent feeds than usual

For the most suitable time to introduce your baby to weaning, you should always consult your doctor.

Importance of Weaning

As your baby grows, so will his nutritional needs. The food that you give him will help him grow and develop. From 6 months on wards breast milk combined with a healthy balanced diet will provide all the nutrients your baby needs.
At this stage, your baby’s natural iron stores which they received from his mother, will have depleted, so it is important that you include iron rich natural foods and iron fortified cereals like NESTLÉ CERELAC in your baby’s diet.
It is a good idea to offer a wide range of tastes and textures during this stage to avoid your baby to become a fussy eater.
The skills required for the intake of solids like chewing and swallowing, which are second nature to you, are skills that your baby will acquire during the weaning period and which will go a long way in establishing your baby’s speech.
